Privacy & Safety

How WhereWeLearn protects people, learning, and trust

WhereWeLearn exists to support learning — not to observe, profile, or influence people.

Privacy and safety are treated as design responsibilities, not legal afterthoughts. This page explains, in plain language, how we think about data, safety, and risk, and where we deliberately draw boundaries.

If something is unclear, we would rather explain it than assume understanding.

Our starting position

WhereWeLearn is built on a simple principle:

People should be able to explore learning freely, without surveillance, pressure, or commercial influence.

That principle shapes every decision about data, safety, and system design.

What data we collect (at a high level)

WhereWeLearn collects a limited amount of technical information to help us understand whether the service is functioning and useful.

This may include:

  • aggregated usage counts (such as visits or page views)
  • broad geographic information at country level
  • high-level technical signals needed for reliability and security

This information is used only to:

  • maintain and improve the service
  • understand general patterns of use
  • ensure stability and accessibility

All reporting is done at an aggregate level.

What we do not collect

To avoid misuse or harm, WhereWeLearn does not:

  • sell or trade personal data
  • track people across the web
  • use advertising or behavioural profiling
  • infer personal characteristics, identities, or outcomes
  • collect data for commercial purposes

Learning should not come with hidden costs.

No advertising, no manipulation

WhereWeLearn does not:

  • run advertising
  • personalise content for commercial gain
  • optimise for attention, addiction, or pressure

We do not design for “engagement at any cost”.

Learning is treated as a human activity, not a metric.

Safety and risk awareness

Safety is broader than technical security.

WhereWeLearn considers risks such as:

  • bias or exclusion in how learning is presented
  • unintended pressure on learners or families
  • misuse of learning pathways or recommendations
  • over-reliance on automated systems

When uncertainty exists, we choose restraint.

Not everything that can be built should be built.

Children, families, and vulnerable users

WhereWeLearn is used by people of different ages and circumstances.

We therefore:

  • avoid persuasive or manipulative design
  • avoid dark patterns or pressure-based prompts
  • aim for clarity and simplicity over optimisation

Where additional safeguards are appropriate, they are approached cautiously and proportionately.

WhereWeLearn signposts learning materials that are hosted elsewhere.

This means:

  • content remains under the control of its original providers
  • external sites have their own policies and terms
  • WhereWeLearn does not modify or monetise linked content

We aim to be clear about these boundaries so people can make informed choices.

How this evolves

Privacy and safety are not “set and forget”.

As WhereWeLearn grows, we will:

  • review practices regularly
  • document significant changes openly
  • prioritise public understanding over technical complexity

When improvements are needed, they will be made carefully and transparently.

Accountability

If you are:

  • a learner or parent with concerns
  • a partner seeking clarity
  • a funder or regulator reviewing our approach

This page exists so our position is visible and understandable.

Formal legal policies are available where required, but this page reflects how decisions are actually made.

Closing principle

WhereWeLearn exists to make learning more accessible — not to observe, shape, or monetise people.

Privacy and safety are how we protect that purpose.
